Hi, I’m Mathew Barton, Your Barnsley Decorator

I come from a long line of established painters and decorators, and I’m now the third generation, with my grandfather 59 years and my father 39 years in the trade. I specialise in all the traditional style painting and decorating, as well as paper hanging. No job is too big or small, and I treat every job with the same high standards.

I’m professional in every aspect of the work, clean and tidy, and my customers’ satisfaction is my ultimate goal. The majority of my work comes through recommendations, which says everything about the standard of the workmanship.

Colours From Our Own Jobs

Each swatch below is taken from the photo above it, so it is the colour as it came out on the wall, not a paint chart. Strong or soft, the preparation underneath is the same.

    Deep navy

Wallpaper Hanging, Lined Up at Every Join

A patterned paper shows every slip, so the walls are made good before the first drop goes up, and the pattern is carried round corners, door frames and sockets until the room reads as one piece.

  • Feature walls and chimney breasts
  • Whole rooms, halls and stairwells
  • Florals, damask, textured and children’s papers
  • Living room with grey botanical wallpaper on the chimney breast and alcoves around a white fire surround
Grey leaf paper around the fireplace
  • Small room papered on every wall in cream wallpaper with trailing blue leaves and red buds, decorating tools on the floor
Trailing-leaf paper on every wall of a small room
  • Garden room papered in silver-grey damask wallpaper under a vaulted ceiling, with a cream armchair and a door to the garden

Before and After: a Barnsley Living Room

The green and yellow walls were patched and made good, then a bold floral paper went up on the long wall, with the other walls painted to suit it.

It is a good example of how a decorating job often runs: the repairs first, by our own team, then the paper, then the paint, with the furniture covered throughout.

Outside Too: Exterior Painting and Decorating

We paint outside as well as in: rendered walls, wooden and sash windows, front doors and conservatory timber. Flaking paint is scraped and sanded back first, glass is masked, and scaffold towers and ladders go up where the height needs them.

From a white farmhouse to a stone cottage with sage green windows and a matching door, the photos here are all from our own outside jobs.

Matt and the team decorated our stairs, hallway and kitchen, and the finish is lovely. They worked hard, kept everything spotless and nothing was any bother, so we have booked them again for the bedrooms.

Claire R.Stairs, hallway and kitchen, September 2022

Matty and Matt redecorated both of our children’s bedrooms. One was painted white, which hid the old pink paint and its knocks completely, and the other was papered. It was quick and neat, with no mess left behind, the price was fair, and they were friendly and helpful throughout.

Jayne D.Two children’s bedrooms, September 2022

The team redecorated the whole house from top to bottom. When there were setbacks and a few small bits still to finish, Matty said he would put them right, and he did. A family firm that tries its hardest, and good value too.

Adam W.Whole house redecorated, July 2022

We could not fault the work Matt and his decorators did, and we are really happy with how it turned out. Friendly people too, and we would point anyone to them, for a whole house or a single small job.

Sophia B.Decorating, May 2022

Matt and the team plastered and painted the staircase and decorated everywhere else in the house, with great workmanship from the first day to the last. Polite and professional, and more than a decorator: they are coming back to fit and tile the bathroom and lay laminate in the kitchen.

Decorating Questions from Barnsley Homeowners

What people ask us most before we start.

Do you hang wallpaper as well as paint?

Yes. Paper hanging is a big part of our work, from a single feature wall or chimney breast to every wall in a hall, stairs and landing. We hang patterned, textured and children’s papers, and line the pattern up at corners and door frames.

Can you decorate a tall hallway, stairs and landing?

Yes. We paper and paint halls, stairs and landings, including the tall wall over the stairwell, and we paint the banisters, spindles, doors and dado rails as part of the same job, so the whole space is finished together.

Do you do exterior painting in Barnsley?

Yes. We paint rendered walls, wooden and sash windows, doors, fascias and conservatory timber. Old paint is scraped and sanded first, and outside work is planned around the weather.

How do you protect my furniture and floors?

Furniture is moved or covered and floors are sheeted before we start, and we keep the job clean and tidy while we work. Our customers mention the tidiness in their reviews.

Can you repair or plaster walls before decorating?

Yes. We have a plasterer and joiners in our team, so cracked plaster, tired walls and damaged woodwork can be put right before the paint or paper goes on, without you finding another firm.

Do you take on small decorating jobs?

Yes. No job is too small to ask about. We decorate single rooms and feature walls as well as whole houses, and every job gets the same care.

Do you decorate offices and business premises?

Yes. We decorate commercial premises as well as homes, including offices for loyal customers. Tell us how the building is used and we will talk through which rooms to do first.

Which areas do you cover for decorating services?

We are based in Barnsley and decorate homes and businesses all around it, from Penistone to Goldthorpe. We also cover Wakefield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Pontefract, Castleford, Leeds and Bradford.

A Decorator for Barnsley and the Villages Around It
